Exposed Management Interface
A firewall, switch or server management interface (SSH, HTTPS admin, RDP, WinRM) is reachable directly from the internet.
- Trigger
- Attack surface scanning finds a management protocol port open and reachable from an external vantage point.
- Risk
- Internet-reachable management interfaces are a primary initial-access vector; brute force, credential stuffing and unpatched-management-plane exploits all rely on this exposure existing. AssurIQ weights this heavily in exposure scoring regardless of the device's patch level.
Prerequisites
- Confirm which specific interface and port are exposed and to which device
- Identify a legitimate administrative access path that does not require the exposed interface
- Confirm firewall or cloud security group ownership to make the change
Recommended fix
- Confirm the exposure with an external scan from outside the customer network.
- Identify the rule, NAT mapping or security group entry that allows the exposure.
- Restrict the rule to specific trusted source IP ranges, or remove the public mapping entirely.
- Provide an alternative access path — VPN, jump host or bastion — for legitimate administrative access.
- Re-scan externally to confirm the interface is no longer reachable from the internet.
- Record the change and update the attack-surface finding.
Validation
- External re-scan shows the management port no longer reachable
- Legitimate administrators confirm they can still reach the device via the alternative path
- Attack Surface no longer lists the asset's exposed management interface
Rollback and recovery
- If the restriction blocks a required legitimate access path, add the specific missing source range rather than reopening the interface publicly.
- Restore the alternate access path configuration if it was newly introduced and needs adjustment.
Evidence generated
- Pre- and post-change external scan results
- Firewall/security group rule change record
- Updated attack-surface finding status
